Pompano Beach Community Park: Built for Necessity, Remade for Joy

From this public edge of Community Park, the recreational campus opens around you, while the active Airpark lies beyond its northern boundary. An aircraft may occasionally cross the sky or add the low sound of an engine. Even when the air is quiet, the relationship between these neighboring landscapes remains the key to this stop.¹

The Airpark began during the Second World War as an auxiliary field for naval aviation training. Pompano Beach acquired it in 1947. But taking ownership did not free every part of the property for a new purpose. Federal conditions continued to protect its aviation use unless particular areas were formally released for something else.²

That shift happened gradually. In 2007, a formal release specifically included Community Park, the Emma Lou Olson Civic Center and the Pompano Beach Amphitheater.²

It may be tempting to summarize this as an old runway becoming a park. The actual history is more layered—and more precise. There is no evidence that you are standing on former runway pavement. Instead, land once governed by an aviation purpose slowly acquired additional civic roles.

On one side of this boundary, aircraft still use the Airpark. On the other, people walk, exercise, gather, compete and attend public events. Neither landscape completely erased the other.¹

That coexistence establishes the larger story of this campus. Its transformation did not happen through one dramatic replacement or one final master plan. It unfolded through decisions about how public land could serve a changing city.

What appears to be a simple edge is really a meeting point between two ideas of public purpose: one connected to movement through the air, and another increasingly shaped by life on the ground.
